You Walk Plenty. But Is Your Pace Helping You Age Well?

Two people can take the same number of steps and get very different benefits for their heart and lungs.

Most of us think about walking in terms of steps. Hit a sensible daily total, and we assume we’re doing the job.

But 6,000 slow steps and 6,000 brisk ones are very different cardiovascular workouts.

In this episode of One Health Tweak a Week, we look at what walking pace adds beyond step count. We’ll explore studies showing that faster walkers have lower risks of cardiovascular disease and premature death, while also asking the obvious question: are they healthier because they walk faster, or do they walk faster because they’re healthier?

Then we move to the evidence that helps untangle that problem. In intervention studies, people doing plenty of steady walking saw little improvement in aerobic fitness, while those adding brisk intervals became fitter, stronger and lowered their blood pressure.

We’ll also look at how much brisk walking may be enough to make a difference, why around 50 minutes a week is a useful target, and how a simple 10%-faster familiar-route test can help you judge your pace.

The takeaway is that if you already walk regularly, making some of those steps brisk may do more for your cardiovascular fitness than simply adding more easy ones.
