This will be really interesting to try but I am at that age where the 3AM is the call of nature. ;~)

This is so great! Your writing stye is so positive. It is enlightening and comforting to realize how universal these experiences are. I am lucky to have very enjoyable, regular sleep. I still appreciate learning ways to maintain and improve. I definitely have a revenge bedtime knitting habit. It is such a wonderful, relaxing part of my day, especially after a full day of activities, responsibilities, and chores. I wish it started earlier but have not committed to making it happen. Will try this week.

I recently shifted to lighter, summer weight bedding and that has been amazing. I had this preconceived idea of how a bed needs to be made in cooler months but lighter bedding means I don't wake up from getting overheated.

I also used to drink a ton of water at night to reduce dehydration in the morning. That was disruptive. Now, I focus on rehydrating in the morning instead.

I also learned to give the cats a final meal at bedtime so they don't wake me in the middle of the night. That helped a ton.

Thanks so much for sharing your insights and strategies. I especially love the concrete, achievable actions you recommend.

Thanks so much, Valerie. Your comments are so motivating.

It sounds as though you should be the one leading a small group sleep improvement cohort! You have it all together.

Next time I'm up faffing around late into the evening with my revenge bedtime procrastination, I'll remind myself that you're also up knitting!

"Faffing" is a new Britishism for me. Thank you.

Ben Jones MD PhD's avatar

Oops! I try to keep them out, but occasionally they slip through!

Bonus points if you can include ‘faffing’ in conversation this week!

Don’t keep them out, I always enjoy seeing them. Since I am learning German I will use “Herumtrödeln” which is translated as “loitering“.

Ben Jones MD PhD's avatar

Okay. I’ll let a few slide by the Britishisms extractor just for you!

Herumtrödeln - that’s quite a mouthful.

German and English are supposed to be closely related. Having never studied German, it’s hard for me to see the similarities. They look so different.

When it comes to food and drink German and English have a lot in common 🍺

Ben Jones MD PhD's avatar

That is very true!

Very interesting and practical. This is such a huge issue.

This is a story I wrote about sleep from an esoteric angle. It goes along with much of what you say. I hope you find it interesting.

Thanks, Fred. A very different take, and plenty to think about!
